As the new school year begins, children, parents and teachers are busy settling into routines. While much attention is given to books, timetables and supplies, it is equally important to focus on children’s emotional well-being. A positive mindset and supportive environment can make all the difference for a successful school year.
Here are six simple ways families and educators can set the tone for a positive start:
- Model Positivity:
Children learn by example. They tend to pay attention to what they see more than what they hear. Show enthusiasm, encouragement and calmness. Support children in creating balanced schedules that include time for learning, play and rest.
- Establish Clear Expectations:
Clear, consistent, daily routines give children stability and confidence. Set aside structured times for learning, reflection and relaxation to help them stay grounded.
- Provide Support and Reinforcement:
Celebrate children’s strengths and efforts. Teachers can share short, uplifting messages or notes with parents about their children’s positive classroom moments. This helps to make students feel appreciated, recognized, and motivated, while parents can create reasonable rewards for milestones achieved.
- Build a Framework for Family Learning:
Create a knowledge-sharing environment at home. Discuss current events, books and experiences. Plan family meals, outings, game nights or movie nights. For fun and educational game ideas, visit UNICEF Jamaica - Play Suggestions and The Playbox | UNICEF.
- Keep Communication Open
Acknowledge and validate children’s feelings. Teach coping strategies like deep breathing, whenever needed. Remind them that free counselling support is available via the U-Matter chatline at 876-838-4897 on WhatsApp or SMS, or for those old enough, via direct message to @ureportjamaica on Instagram or Facebook messenger.
- Prioritise Sleep
Good sleep is vital. Children need 9–12 hours of rest each night for better learning and overall well-being. Parents and teachers also benefit from healthy sleep routines, so ensure you get adequate rest.
By nurturing children’s emotional readiness alongside their academic preparation, we can help them feel confident, supported and excited to learn. Together, let’s set the tone for a positive school year ahead.
