On 28 January 2023, a devastating earthquake shook the county of Khoy, West Azarbaijan. The earthquake caused significant damage to buildings and infrastructure in Khoy County, leaving communities, women and children in need of immediate assistance. This included extensive damage to the primary healthcare infrastructure. UNICEF, alongside the government, swiftly responded to address the healthcare challenges facing the affected population, including newborns, children, and mothers.
“Some of the health centres faced considerable damage during the earthquake,” says Ms Masoumeh Salahi, head of the Primary Health Services Centre in Firouragh, the epicentre of the earthquake, adding: “Therefore, we provided the health care services in the prefabricated rooms. The services we provide here include children’s primary health care, screening, vaccination, pregnancy and postpartum care, and other services.”
UNICEF delivered eight prefabricated healthcare rooms as a part of its multifaceted response to the earthquake. This effort was a collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Medical Education. It was financially supported by the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (EU ECHO) and the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).
Visiting the installation of the rooms in the area, Jeiran Kordestani, a member of UNICEF’s Health and Nutrition Team, says: "In addition to the prefabricated rooms Khoy also benefited from UNICEF's support in enhancing the vaccine cold chain system and was among the cities that received refrigerator trucks. As part of this collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, UNICEF provided 17 high-quality refrigerated vehicles, which were distributed to medical universities nationwide."
UNICEF’s support in Khoy County covered a wide range of vital relief aid to the affected population, including psychosocial support through child-friendly spaces, distribution of hygiene kits, provision of prefabricated latrines and showers, cash assistance for rebuilding damaged homes, rehabilitation of schools and provision of prefabricated health clinics and classrooms.
