Highlights

Scaling innovation for children needs more than just creativity – it requires a structured, evidence-based approach. The 5-Dimensional (5D) Innovation Framework, developed by the UNICEF Office of Innovation, ensures that solutions are rigorously assessed across key areas essential for successful scaling: innovation, business model, impact, scalability and risk. It helps decision-makers formulate strategic choices, increasing the likelihood of successful scaling, and provides an objective basis for discontinuing support for an innovation when necessary.

Designed as a practical assessment tool, the 5D Innovation Framework guides decision-making throughout the innovation lifecycle. It supports teams in identifying promising innovations and scaling them iteratively, driven by evidence and continuous learning. The framework provides clear benchmarks and a scoring system for each dimension and stage of innovation. Visual tools make it easy to compare progress and pinpoint strengths and gaps. By embedding the 5D Innovation Framework into everyday practice, we enhance our ability to generate meaningful impact and support governments in doing the same.
