Need and poverty have haunted almost every family in Gaza, even long before the relentless 15-month war. Today, families are suffering even more—hunger remains rampant, and children continue to pay the heaviest price, dying from malnutrition and preventable diseases. However, UNICEF is there for every child and family in the Strip, providing indispensable humanitarian aid, including cash assistance that empowers children and their families to meet their most urgent needs with dignity and choice.
Take Saeed’s and Nedal’s families, for example. Already struggling to make ends meet, both families face immense hardships. But with UNICEF support, they have found a glimpse of hope. Yet, amid Ramadan and throughout the year, more support is needed to ensure they live the dignified life they deserve.

Two Generations, One Struggle Under the Gaza Skies
Amid destroyed homes and buildings reduced to ashes, 67-year-old Saeed and his three grandchildren, Habeba, Haneen, and Rahaf, live in a worn-out makeshift tent after losing his wife and two sons to an airstrike on their home in Khan Younis. Like many struggling families in Gaza, Saeed depends entirely on aid. “This assistance has been crucial. I’ve received it three times, and it has greatly helped me purchase essential items, especially for the children,” he said. UNICEF’s digital cash assistance has been a lifeline, enabling him to buy essentials like food, particularly for 5-year-old Haneen, who was diagnosed with diabetes. He added, “I spend the money on nutritious food for Haneen, particularly vegetables.”

It is Never Enough: A Family’s Plea for Help in Gaza
Displacement after displacement, struggle after struggle, yet Nedal and his family chose to return to their severely destroyed home, as they could no longer endure the worsening conditions in the tents. Even after spending their little money on flour and vegetables, it’s never enough. With so many dependents, their needs far exceed their means. Three of Nedal’s daughters-in-law are breastfeeding, and they and their babies need nutritious food to stay healthy. To ensure they are well-fed, he has to prioritize buying fruits and vegetables. In a cracked voice, he said, “Receiving this assistance is truly life-changing, but it’s not enough for all of us. I hope we can continue to receive more support to help my family more.”
This Ramadan, when families are on the verge and need every bit of support, who will be there for them?
We Are.
UNICEF has been providing digital cash assistance to vulnerable families in Gaza since the start of the war and has been scaling up efforts following the ceasefire. Since then, over 20,000 families have received e-cash assistance, giving them the necessary resources to meet their basic needs and restore their dignity.
During the holy month and beyond, help us provide more life-saving aid, including cash assistance, to those who need it most.
