Kuwait, 20 June 2023 – UNICEF welcomes the State of Kuwait’s contribution to provide emergency relief for children and their families in four different countries. The flexible funding, US$500,000 for Afghanistan, US$969,000 for Sudan, US$646,000 for Somalia and US$646,000 for Pakistan will help bolster UNICEF emergency response and provide crisis-affected children with much-needed education, nutrition, health, protection, and other vital services.
In Sudan, UNICEF is extending all possible means to continue to provide affected and vulnerable children and their families with health and nutrition support across the country, even during the midst of the current armed conflict. The recent contribution by The Government of Kuwait is extremely and deeply appreciated, allowing UNICEF Sudan to work with partners and service providers, and preposition lifesaving health and nutrition supplies, to sustain and scale-up its response for the vulnerable children and their families in Sudan.
In Pakistan and following the devasting floods that hit the country in August 2022, the contribution from The Government of Kuwait will support UNICEF to reach over 190,000 flood affected people through the water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) humanitarian response, through the rehabilitation of public water supply systems and climate resilient sanitation facilities in disaster affected districts of Punjab and Baluchistan provinces.
In Somalia, the contribution from The Government of Kuwait will enable UNICEF to respond to the dire needs of children and their families affected by the floods in Beledweyne and Buloburte Districts in Hiran Region, Hirshabelle State, through provision of maternal and newborn health care. Heath care services include management of diarrheal cases and outreach health education sessions at community level. UNICEF will also provide routine immunization to children under one year and measles vaccination for children under five. To help prevent water-borne diseases, UNICEF will provide safe water and hygiene activities to health care centers.
In Afghanistan, particularly following the June 2022 earthquake in southeastern Paktika and Khost Provinces, the humanitarian situation deteriorated significantly. Thousands of children and women are still in need of education, protection, health, nutrition, and water and sanitation services. This contribution from The Government of Kuwait will enable UNICEF to reach vulnerable children and their families in these Provinces, such as clean water, access to education, and psychosocial support through child-friendly spaces.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to The Government of Kuwait for their generous donations and unwavering commitment to our shared mission of reaching the world’s most vulnerable and excluded children. This support will enable us to provide vital services and protection to those in need. The enduring partnership between UNICEF and Kuwait has been instrumental in addressing the most pressing challenges faced by children, ensuring their well-being, education, and health”. said Eltayeb Adam, UNICEF Representative to the Gulf Area.
