Bissau, 25 June 2026 – The Ministry of Public Health of Guinea-Bissau, through the National Malaria Control Programme (PNLP), will officially launch the National Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN) Distribution Campaign during a ceremony to be held in Safim on the morning of 26 June.

As part of this national campaign, the distribution of mosquito nets will take place across the entire country, with the exception of the Autonomous Sector of Bissau, where implementation will occur at a later stage.

This campaign is part of the Government’s ongoing efforts, in collaboration with its partners, to strengthen malaria prevention and control—one of the leading causes of illness and death in the country.

The campaign aims to distribute approximately 1.5 million mosquito nets nationwide, ensuring an average coverage of one net for every two people. This will help protect families, particularly children under five years of age and pregnant women, who are the most vulnerable to malaria.

Despite the progress achieved, it is estimated that around 84 per cent of the population uses mosquito nets, still below the regional target of 95 per cent. This underscores the need to further strengthen community mobilisation and promote the correct and consistent use of these life-saving tools.

The implementation of the campaign is based on an integrated strategy that combines household registration and distribution voucher delivery, organised distribution through fixed and outreach sites, and intensive community awareness activities, ensuring equitable and effective coverage across all health regions of the country.

In this context, the Ministry of Public Health calls for the active participation of all families, community leaders, civil society organisations, the media, and partners to ensure the success of the campaign and contribute to a significant reduction of malaria in Guinea-Bissau.

The campaign is supported technically and financially by partners such as the Global Fund/UNDP, Roll Back Malaria (RBM), the Alliance for Malaria Prevention (AMP), the Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM), the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and others, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening the health system and protecting populations.

To ensure broad uptake, social mobilisation and communication activities will be implemented, engaging community health workers, traditional leaders, youth associations and local organisations, who will play a key role in raising awareness within communities.

The Government of Guinea-Bissau therefore reaffirms its commitment to significantly reducing malaria-related morbidity and mortality and to ensuring universal access to effective prevention measures.

Take part in the campaign! Protect your family: sleep under a mosquito net every night.
