UNICEF East Asia and the Pacific Regional Director Debora Comini visits the Republic of Korea
“Children bear the brunt of the climate-related impacts”
Debora Comini, Regional Director for UNICEF East Asia and the Pacific, has played a pivotal role in spearheading a series of transformative meetings in the Republic of Korea. These gatherings marked significant progress in our commitment to improving the lives of children in East Asia and the Pacific. Ms. Comini discussed a range of issues with government representatives, including Climate, Health, and Humanitarian concerns that impact children in the region.
Ms. Comini met with two representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Mr. Lee Kyoo-Ho, Deputy Director-General of the Multilateral Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Assistance Division, and Ms. Hyoeun (Jenny) Kim, Ambassador and Deputy Minister for Climate Change. She also met with Mr. Hong Seok-Hwa, Vice President at the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). In all three cases, the impact of the climate crisis on children in the region was a topic of discussion. The Regional Director also met with her counterpart at the Green Growth Institute (GGGI), Dr. Achala C. Abeysinghe, Regional Director and Head of Programmes for Asia.
Ms. Comini ended her visit with a meeting with two key parliamentary members, Honorable Do Jong-hwan, Leader of the Korean Parliamentary Friends of UNICEF, and Honorable Lee In-young, President of the Korean Parliamentary League on Children, Population, and Environment. In both instances, they discussed how to further strengthen our collaboration in East Asia and the Pacific, creating a more climate-resilient future for millions of children.
UNICEF EAPRO Regional Director made her first official visit to Korea from 29 to 30 August 2023.
