UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Climate Advisor Silvia Gaya visits the Republic of Korea

Climate change is an issue of global concern, and its impact on vulnerable populations, especially children, cannot be underestimated. In recognition of this, UNICEF has taken a proactive stance in prioritizing social sectors for climate adaptation, acknowledging their pivotal role in safeguarding the well-being of children. Silvia Gaya, UNICEF’s Climate Advisor for the East Asia and Pacific region, recently shared insights from the "Over the Tipping Point" report, revealing the profound implications of climate change on children in the region.

Ms. Gaya met with several influential figures in the Korean Government. These included two members of the Korean Parliamentary Friends of UNICEF (KPFU), Honorable Shin Hyun-young and Honorable Lee Eun Ju. Ms. Gaya emphasized the importance of parliamentary involvement in advocating for the rights of children impacted by the climate crisis.

Ms. Gaya also met with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), with whom UNICEF is developing a strategic collaboration that will provide more climate-resilient social services to children in Asia and Africa. This partnership represents a significant step toward achieving a more sustainable future where environmental responsibility and child protection go hand in hand.

At the heart of UNICEF’s work with the Korean Government on climate issues is a joint commitment to protecting children and mitigating the challenges posed by climate change.
