Korean lawmakers as critical advocates for child rights issues
Korea’s National Assembly has a dedicated group of lawmakers – the Korean Parliamentary Friends of UNICEF (KPFU) – that actively supports the work of UNICEF. Established in 2007, this group of more than 40 lawmakers from multiple political partners works with UNICEF to organize policy dialogues and to lobby for increased financial support for children. KPFU sits under a larger group known as the Korean Parliamentary League on Children, Population, and Environment (CPE), which was established in 1989. Recent collaborations between UNICEF and Korean lawmakers have included policy dialogues and roundtables on Climate Action and HDP Nexus issues; meetings with senior Members of Parliament to address critical matters of Climate, Disability, and Multilateralism; obtaining parliamentary endorsement of the Declaration on Children, Youth and Climate Change; and participation at a Global Forum on Children and Youth.
Advocacy for children's issues and increased child-focused Official Development Assistance (ODA) remain at the forefront of UNICEF’s engagement with Korean lawmakers. UNICEF thanks the National Assembly, and particularly members of the Korean Parliamentary Friends of UNICEF, for their unwavering commitment to saving children’s lives and defending their rights.
