Safeguarding the Future: Investing in Preventive Health and Nutrition in Ghana
Highlights
Ghana is at a critical turning point, shifting from treating illness to preventing it. While many essential preventive services, including child immunization, have relied on external support, the phase-out of Gavi funding before 2030 makes sustainable domestic financing urgent.
UNICEF Ghana commissioned a cost-benefit analysis of 14 key preventive health and nutrition interventions to inform this transition. The findings show that investing in prevention saves lives, reduces long-term costs, and strengthens Ghana’s human capital, while failing to sustain these services would lead to avoidable illness, lost productivity, and higher future costs.
