Assessment of the m-Birth Project
A progress report on computerized birth registration in Ghana
Highlights
Birth registration helps to provide the child’s first legal recognition, bestow their legal identity for life and provide for them a birth certificate, without which a child may be excluded from education, health, social services and their other rights. In Ghana, 4 in every 10 children are not registered at birth.
Even when children are registered, many have no proof of registration. About 15% of the registered children below the age of five do not have a birth certificate and are therefore at risk of being excluded from accessing basic services.
