Highlights

While the Treaty on the European Union and the Charter of Fundamental Rights show a commitment to protecting and promoting children's rights, limited legal competencies restrict the EU's ability to create a more unified and comprehensive approach to these rights. The EU has adopted a case-by-case approach due to the cross-sectoral nature of children’s rights.

The current political framework’s effectiveness in addressing children’s rights is contingent not only on its implementation, but also on the establishment of necessary institutional structures.

This study critically evaluates the children’s rights governance framework in the European Union (EU) against best practices and mechanisms implemented at the member States level.
