Highlights

UNICEF, in collaboration with WaterAid, developed an assessment report that provides a comprehensive assessment of the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) conditions in healthcare facilities  and vaccination sites in Eswatini. The report includes demographic information, service statuses, and regional and national summaries, providing valuable insight into the conditions of healthcare facilities across the country. The assessment was conducted through visits to healthcare facilities, data collection through engagements with senior personnel, and observation. The assessment revealed that the majority of healthcare facilities in Eswatini lack adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities. For instance, only 50% of the facilities had access to clean water, while only 30% had adequate sanitation facilities. Additionally, only 20% of the facilities had adequate hand hygiene facilities, which is a critical component of infection prevention and control. The report also highlighted the need for improved infrastructure and maintenance of existing facilities. For example, many healthcare facilities lacked proper drainage systems, which led to flooding during the rainy season. Furthermore, many facilities lacked proper waste management systems, which posed a risk to the health of patients and healthcare workers. Overall, the assessment report is a valuable resource for stakeholders involved in improving the WASH conditions in healthcare facilities and vaccination sites in Eswatini, and it can be used to inform future assessments and interventions.
