Providing Sustainable Water Access in Gambella
Achievements of the Regional WASH Program for refugees and host communities
Highlights
Itang town in Gambella, Ethiopia, hosts over 240,000 refugees and 28,000 host community members, many of whom previously faced severe water shortages and relied on expensive, unsustainable water trucking. Recognizing the urgent need for long-term water solutions, the Regional WASH Program for Refugees (R-WASH) was launched in 2021, with funding from BMZ through KfW.
R-WASH aims to develop climate resilient, utility-operated water supply systems that provide safe, affordable, and sustainable water services for refugees and host communities. This programme also strengthens peace-building and social cohesion for both populations.
