Ending Child Marriage in Sub-Saharan Africa: Country Strategy Notes and Regional Insights
Country and regional guidance documents to support accelerated, context-specific and multi-sectoral action to end child marriage across Eastern and Southern Africa
Highlights
Child marriage remains one of the most persistent violations of girls’ rights in sub-Saharan Africa, with profound implications for health, education, protection and long-term development outcomes. Despite important progress in some contexts, the rate of decline across the region remains far too slow to meet the 2030 target under Sustainable Development Goal 5.3, and is further threatened by intersecting crises — including climate shocks, conflict, economic instability, displacement and health emergencies.
This collection of strategy notes and analytical briefs has been developed to support governments, UNICEF country offices, partners and stakeholders in accelerating evidence-informed, context specific and system-strengthening efforts to end child marriage across Eastern and Southern Africa. The documents reflect a two-year regional learning and analysis initiative led by UNICEF ESARO and UNICEF WCARO, in partnership with researchers and country offices.
