The cholera epidemic that affected multiple countries in Eastern and Southern Africa in 2023 persists and continues to impact the region in increasing number of countries, placing a significant strain on communities and healthcare facilities.

To support UNICEF country offices in the region with response and advocacy efforts on keeping schools safe and open, a brief guidance note on safe school operations during cholera was developed.

For any questions or further suggestions, please reach out to Carolin Wäldchen from the Education team at the UNICEF Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office.
