Supervised Independent Living in Uganda
About
This case study explores how supervised independent living (SIL) supports adolescents and young adults in Uganda who cannot live with their families. It highlights three NGO-led programmes - Child’s i Foundation, Hope for Justice, and SOS Children’s Villages that provide mentorship, life skills training, and emotional support to young people transitioning from residential care to independent adulthood. The study emphasizes the importance of structured support systems, trained social workers, and community-based mentors to ensure successful transitions. It also outlines key lessons learned, including the need for tailored support, strong legal frameworks, and long-term investment in care systems.
