R-WASH in Action: Sustainable water and sanitation for refugees and host communities

Partnering to build lasting water and sanitation solutions in fragile, conflict-affected settings

About

The Regional Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Programme (R-WASH) is a multi-country, multi-phase initiative implemented by UNICEF and UNHCR, with funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Xylem. R-WASH supports refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and host communities in fragile, conflict-affected settings across eight sites in Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan.

This brief outlines how the R-WASH programme, thanks to BMZ through KfW Development Bank, is achieving lasting impact through building permanent, cost-effective, and climate-resilient water and sanitation systems, as well as through investing in strengthening local capacities by establishing efficient, community-based water utilities to ensure long-term sustainability and access to safe water and sanitation for all.
