Neera's story: From migrant to mentor
UN Volunteer draws on her own migration experience to support children on the move in Trinidad and Tobago
Hi! I’m Neera Abigail Carrizales Ramroop, a young Venezuelan currently living in Trinidad and Tobago. I’m an Art Youth Mentor and UN Volunteer with UNICEF’s Children on the Move Programme in the Eastern Caribbean.
My roots: Trinidadian, Venezuelan-Indigenous and Spanish, are richly diverse. That mix has shaped how I see the world and given me a deep, personal understanding of what it truly means to be someone on the move.
At UNICEF, I support programmes that aim to improve the lives of migrant children, especially through access to education. I work closely with children and their families, listening to their stories, learning about their needs, and sharing in their dreams. Every child is on a journey, and I believe each of those journeys deserves to be seen, heard and supported.
My passion for this work comes from my own experience. When I migrated, I faced uncertainty, language barriers and moments of fear. But I also found strength in helping others navigate similar challenges. I couldn’t change what was happening in my home country, but I realised I could make a difference where I was. I saw how many children struggled to continue their education in a new place. That is what drives me every day: making sure no child has to face that struggle alone.
One of the most meaningful moments during my time with UNICEF has been helping to launch a Social Cohesion Project in schools. From the very beginning, I witnessed something powerful. Local and migrant children coming together, forming friendships, learning side by side, and celebrating their cultures through art, games and bilingual activities. I will never forget the joy on their faces, or the small drawing one of them gave me at the end of the day. I still keep it, as a reminder of why this work matters so much.
When I am not working, I enjoy quiet time at home with my family. We laugh, read, paint, and spend time with our pets. These simple moments give me strength and joy.
My dream is a world where every child feels safe, supported and free to dream big. I truly believe that with compassion, teamwork and a shared purpose, we can build that world together.
