World Immunization Week: WHO and UNICEF support to protecting lives through vaccination

Immunization for All is Humanly Possible

24 April 2025

Sarajevo, 24 April 2025 – The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) are joining hands with the local health authorities to mark World Immunization Week from 24 to 30 April 2025. This year's theme, "Immunization for All is Humanly Possible," carries a powerful message: through collaboration, investment, and trust, we can close immunization gaps and protect every child – without exception.

In recent years, we have witnessed the fragility of immunization systems. Misinformation, mistrust, and lack of community support have led to a decline in vaccination coverage in many communities, resulting in the resurgence of diseases such as measles and pertussis. These challenges are a stark reminder that our work is far from finished.

Erwin Cooreman, WHO Special Representative in BiH said: “Immunization remains one of the most effective tools we have to protect people of all ages from the life-threatening diseases. Yet, the level of immunization coverage in BiH is not at the desirable level. We must work together to ensure that vaccines are accessible to everyone, everywhere. Vaccines are safe, they are effective, and they save lives.”

UNICEF and WHO are working together with governments, supported by partners including the European Union, to prevent and respond to outbreaks of preventable diseases. This involves engaging with communities, building capacities of healthcare workers, strengthening the cold-chain, immunization and disease surveillance systems, and conducting vaccination catch-up campaigns. We call on all people to build their knowledge on immunization through trusted sources, to rely on verified health information and to speak with pediatricians and healthcare professionals. Vaccines are among the safest and most effective public health tools, saving millions of lives every year.

Marc Lucet, UNICEF Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts to reach vulnerable populations: "In Bosnia and Herzegovina, we are committed to working with local communities, healthcare providers, and professionals to promote the benefits of immunization. Together, we can overcome barriers and ensure that every child receives the life-saving vaccines they need. We extend our gratitude to all health workers and partners who continue to champion the right to health through immunization – and we invite every member of society to join us in this vital mission."

UNICEF and WHO remain committed to supporting country authorities, health workers, and communities in strengthening immunization systems, restoring trust, and ensuring equitable access to vaccines for every child. Immunization is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of public health. We are all accountable to ensure that no one is left behind in our efforts to protect every individual from vaccine-preventable diseases.
