The UNICEF Meena Media Awards recognize excellence in journalistic reporting that promotes child rights in Bangladesh media. Introduced in 2005, the Meena Media Award enters its 18th year in 2023 with the objective to win support for the cause of children from decision-makers and the wider public by promoting journalistic reporting.
Terms and conditions
Submissions for the UNICEF Meena Media awards are solicited for journalistic reporting in support of child rights.
Eligibility criteria
Submissions must be:
- originally published in established Bangladesh media, in English or Bangla, in text, photography or video format between 1 September 2022 and 30 November 2023;
- produced by persons residing in Bangladesh;
- journalistically ethical, must not put children at risk, and must respect the dignity of children;
- submitted digitally, in the format of original publication, and with proof of publication;
- relevant to the selected submission category;
- limited to no more than three submissions per person/team in each category;
- produced by individuals who are not immediate family members of the judges or UNICEF staff.
Submissions not adhering to these criteria will be disqualified.
Award selection criteria
There are no set criteria for the judging of the Meena Media Awards. The definitions of each category are the only guidelines. It is left up to the independent judges to determine exactly what constitutes excellence in journalistic reporting on child rights issues in each category.
Categories in which submissions for the Meena Media Awards (18 and over) will be accepted

Children as agents of change
About children taking action for positive change locally and nationally. -
Children at risk
Child labour, children living in street situations, children with disabilities, violence and abuse against children, and other child protection themes. -
Climate change and children
Climate change impacts and/or mitigation in the areas of children’s education, health, poverty, migration, future and more. -
Education and children
Exploring issues of access, quality, inclusion, literacy, numeracy and more. -
Gender equality

Girls’ empowerment, positive action by girls, boys, women and men to advance gender equality, including through sports. Child marriage, gender-based discrimination and violence.

Rohingya refugee children
Situation, needs and stories of hope about Rohingya refugee children. - Child rights (general category)
This is for all the compelling, hard-hitting and wonderful child rights stories that do not fit neatly into one of the specific categories.

Award prizes
- Winners of the UNICEF Meena Media Awards (18 and over) will be awarded Taka 100,000 and a crest.
- Winners of the UNICEF Children's Meena Media Awards (under-18) will be awarded Taka 50,000 and a crest.
- All nominees will receive a certificate.
Rights reserved
UNICEF reserves the right to move eligible submissions to the most appropriate category from the category originally submitted under.
UNICEF reserves the right to re-publish material of winners on its channels. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
