Yerevan, 17 May 2023 – Sergey Smbatyan, the Founding Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra and the Principal Conductor of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra has been appointed as newest UNICEF National Ambassador.

Previously, Mr. Smbatyan joined UNICEF and Public TV of Armenia to develop a parenting master class on how parents and caregivers can foster children’s development, stimulate brain growth, and build mental health using the power of music. On May 15, on the occasion of the International Day of Families, Mr. Smbatyan joined UNICEF in opening the doors of two alternative preschools in two rural communities of the Artik consolidated community for young children.

In addition, Mr Smbatyan has been lending his voice to promote child rights and raise awareness around UNICEF’s key advocacy issues, with a particular focus on positive parenting and the importance of early childhood education and development in providing children with the best start to life.

“When it comes to child rights, we are all on the same team. We are inviting people who are ready to make a difference for children, who can do the possible and the impossible to join us and to help ensure all children in Armenia have the opportunities and the support they need to develop to their full potential. We are pleased that Maestro Sergey Smbatyan agreed to join the UNICEF team and we look forward to working together in the next two years to shine a light on the needs and aspirations of children in Armenia,” noted Christine Weigand, UNICEF Representative in Armenia.

UNICEF’s Ambassadors are among the most recognizable faces of UNICEF. As prominent personalities from the worlds of art, music, film, sport and more, they play a critical role in shining a light on the challenges children face around the globe. Ambassadors volunteer their time to raise awareness and mobilize support, helping UNICEF to reach the most disadvantaged children and adolescents with lifesaving help and hope.

"I am honored to join UNICEF as an Ambassador, to advocate for child rights and support programs that ensure every child in Armenia has access to the resources they need to learn, grow, and explore their unique talents," said Sergey Smbatyan.
