Key Highlights

On 31 August, a 6.0+ earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, devastating villages in Nangarhar and Kunar. More than 500,000 people, including 263,000 children, were exposed; thousands of families remain displaced and fearful of returning home.

As of 14 September, over 2,164 people have died, 3,428 are injured, and more than 6,000 houses are damaged or destroyed. Children account for nearly half of the deaths, with 987 fatalities and hundreds left orphaned or separated.

UNICEF mounted a rapid multi-sectoral response within 72 hours and has since scaled up: restoring health services, deploying mobile health and nutrition teams, expanding WASH facilities, establishing child-friendly spaces and temporary learning centres, and delivering cash assistance in camps and remote areas.

With winter approaching, urgent support is needed. UNICEF requires US$ 21.6 million for its six-month plan; with only US$ 5.2 million secured, a US$ 16.3 million funding gap risks leaving children without life-saving assistance.
