The situation
One month after the destructive super typhoon Yagi hit Viet Nam, children and families in affected areas still face acute deprivations and risks. Health and water systems remain damaged, disrupting access to safe drinking water and clean sanitation for 570,000 people and increasing the risk of disease outbreaks.
By 7 Oct, Government reports confirmed 318 people dead, 26 missing, and 1,976 injured. About 220,000 children under five and 70,000 pregnant and lactating women are at risk of malnutrition due to disrupted health and other services and lack of clean water among other factors. Loss of livelihoods combined with displacement left an estimated 365,000 families in acute need of cash support to cover basic needs.
With high prevailing poverty rates in the Northern mountainous areas - home to ethnic minority communities - the typhoon has further worsened the situation of vulnerable communities.
Impacts at a Glance
- 2.65 million - children live in the most affected 11 provinces.
- 570,000 – people in rural areas still face disruptions to safe drinking water & sanitation.
- 365,000 - families in acute need of cash support to cover basic needs.
UNICEF Response and Recovery Action
UNICEF Viet Nam was among the first actors on the ground to respond to government’s request for assistance, providing lifesaving humanitarian support, and we continue to address critical needs in support to national efforts.
In the last 30 days, we have focused on ensuring that the most vulnerable children and families have access to essential health and nutrition, cash support, education and child protection services, including psychosocial support and the prevention of gender-based violence.
The first priority for our rapid response has been the delivery of life-saving water and sanitation and hygiene supplies to keep people healthy and avoid the spread of water-borne diseases. In this regard, UNICEF’s support includes providing 140,000 people (31,462 households) and health facilities with drinking water containers and water purification tablets, providing WASH supplies to over 24,000 people in Lao Cai and Yen Bai (2,800 water tanks, 2,200 drinking water bottles, 2,000 ceramic filters, 20,000 water purification tablets, 2,700 hand sanitizers and 2,800 soap bars).
On nutrition, we have delivered 12 tons of therapeutic products to combat child acute malnutrition across six provinces. On education, UNICEF supplied early childhood and primary learning kits to nearly 5,700 children and delivered 140,000 textbooks to various schools. Additionally, 7,300 child protection and learning kits have been distributed to support affected children. UNICEF is also coordinating with the government to provide cash transfers to 1,600 vulnerable households, while promoting essential health and protection messages through Social Behaviour Change Communication initiatives.
As the situation transitions from immediate relief to long-term recovery, UNICEF is committed to building climate-resilient systems through:
- Restoring and reinforcing social services, including healthcare and education.
- Training local health workers and educators on disaster preparedness and psychosocial support.
- Engaging communities in health and safety practices.
- Offering ongoing psychosocial support to help children cope with trauma.
Through comprehensive recovery strategies and community engagement, UNICEF aims to ensure that children can learn, play, and thrive, while building a more resilient future against climate-related disasters.
