The Spotlight Initiative in Uganda
Helping to eliminate violence against women and girls
Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in the world. To address this, the European Union and the United nations have embarked on a multi-year programme to eliminate violence against women and girls.
In Uganda, the Spotlight Initiative will be officially launched on International Women’s Day, 8 March 2020.
The Spotlight Initiative coordinated by Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development is supporting concrete measures to end violence with a special focus on prevention, protection and provision of services; promoting children and women’s economic empowerment and participation in all aspects of society and will be a catalyst for strengthening the country’s protection system.

To address all forms of violence against women and children, the European Union and the United Nations will launch the Spotlight Initiative: To eliminate violence against women and girls, a global multi-year partnership on International Women’s Day, 8 March 2020.
