Statement on Turkish Constitutional Court's Ruling on Penal Code Provisions on Sexual Abuse of Children

GENEVA, 23 August 2016 – UNICEF has been carefully following the recent Turkish Constitutional Court’s (TCC) ruling related to the criminal code provisions on the sexual abuse of children.
The complex legal language used in the judgment has led to a range of interpretations and misunderstandings and there has been considerable debate and concern about its implications for the protection of children’s rights in Turkey.
The Ministry of Justice has announced that new provisions are now being drafted to strengthen the protection of children in the Penal Code by the deadline given by the TCC.
At a recent hearing session organized by the Parliamentary Research Commission to Prevent Child Exploitation, UNICEF shared its observations and recommendations on ways to strengthen the protection of children from sexual abuse.
UNICEF advocates for the protection of all children from all forms of violence and remains committed to continue working with the Turkish Government and institutions on child protection and the development of the new law.
