The challenge
Many children in Türkiye - especially girls from vulnerable groups - continue to face pressure to fill traditional gender roles and are at particular risk of gender-based violence, including child marriage. Despite the legal framework social norms restrict women and girls’ roles and empowerment in the society. Child marriage remains a challenge – it curtails children’s education, compromises their health and exposes them to the risk of violence and poverty.
The solution
UNICEF works with the MoFSS, line ministries, municipalities, civil society, UN agencies, youth groups and the private sector to:
- prevent and respond to child marriage and gender-based violence by addressing social norms
- improve institutional capacity to prevent and respond to cases
- support the alignment of legislative and policy framework with international commitments
- support parents’ gender-responsive parenting skills and work with children and young people on positive gender socialization
- empower girls by supporting their skills.
