Youth Forum “Role of adolescence and youth in local development”

Guliston, 13 April – Representatives of local authorities, children and youth, delegates from local and international organizations convened in Sughd region to open the Youth Forum dedicated to “The role of adolescence and youth in local development”. The main goal of the forum is to raise awareness on the importance of adolescence and youth participation in the decision making process, local governance and social development of the local communities.

The forum was organized and hosted by the local government of Bobojon Gafurov, UNICEF Tajikistan and PO “Ehyo: Farhang va Taraqqiyot” with the financial support of the Government of the United Kingdom.

During the forum, participants presented results of their active participation and initiatives implemented jointly with local government in four districts and cities of Sughd region; Bobojon Gafurov district, Devashtich, Jabbor Rasulov and Isfara city.

In her welcoming remarks, deputy chairperson of Bobojon Gafurov district, chairperson of Commission on child rights, Mrs. Mastura Komili noted:

«Youth in our country has great potential and every day, we are witnessing the impact of their innovative ideas, their passion, and commitment that is supporting community development and strengthening social cohesion. The most important thing I would like to highlight is the trust that we have in our youth”.   

UNICEF Tajikistan Chief of the program on Adolescence development and participation Mr. Khushbakht Hojiev said;

«UNICEF together with the Government of Tajikistan work to unlock the potential of children and youth in the country. The wealth of this country is its children and young people, a great human capital. They are the engine of development, therefore today it is very important to combine our efforts in investing in young people, who tomorrow will build the bright future of Tajikistan». 

Youth and adolescents from four districts of Sughd region presented results of their community development initiatives, exchanged experiences and elaborated jointly with local government representatives of their districts on how to sustain youth-led initiatives and take steps towards establishing child and youth-friendly cities and communities.

The forum concluded with an exhibition of youth folk crafts, a photo exhibition of youth engagement and other local handmade products developed by adolescence and young people.
