Families flee escalating violence in northwest Syria
150,000 people left their homes to flee violence in Aleppo and Idlib governorates during the past two weeks.
The escalating hostilities in northwest Syria has forced a reported 150,000 people to leave their homes to flee violence in Aleppo and Idlib governorates during the past two weeks. Since 20th April, at least 12 children have been reportedly killed in northwestern Syria as violence in northwest Syria continues to escalate.
The fighting has also forced UNICEF partners in northern Hama and southern Idlib to halt programmes providing safe water, adequate sanitation and hygiene to affected communities in those areas.
Further north, families are fleeing towards the already crowded camps hosting internally displaced people in Atmeh near the Turkish border. Hundreds of families who have not found shelter in the IDP camps are staying in nearby olive groves.
UNICEF teams are working closely with partners to ensure basic support to displaced children is provided. UNICEF urges all parties to the conflict and those with influence over them to protect children at all times.
