In the heart of a town nestled within the Gedo region lies a beacon of hope and healing: the Dollow Referral Hospital. Within its walls, countless miracles unfold daily, and among its success stories, one shines exceptionally bright – the journey of baby Taman.
Taman's tale begins with her premature birth at 28 weeks, with a weight barely tipping the scale at 1 kg. Her entrance into the world was fraught with challenges, yet it was met with the unwavering dedication of healthcare professionals at Trocaire.
Idman found herself in her home in Belet Hawa amid uncertainty upon baby Taman's premature birth. The moment Taman took her first breath, it was apparent that she would face an uphill battle. Severe respiratory complications, hypothermia and dangerously low glucose levels threatened her fragile existence. However, her mother’s proactive approach to seeking postnatal care at the Dollow Referral Hospital, a Trócaire-supported facility, proved to be a lifesaver.
A team of dedicated medical professionals awaited Idman’s arrival, and Taman soon found sanctuary within the hospital's walls. Placed in the warmth of an incubator, she began her fight for survival under the watchful eyes of skilled caregivers. Daily weight monitoring, meticulous feeding schedules through a nasogastric tube, and the gentle guidance of feeding assistants became her routine.
“Each day brought new challenges and triumphs as my baby grew stronger, inching towards accepting the oral feeding, with determination and resilience,” Idman says.
Twelve weeks later, Taman emerged from Dollow Referral Hospital and was transformed. “She weighed a healthier two kilograms and had her essential vaccinations to protect her from diseases,” Idman recalls. Taman touts the physical evidence of her resilience and the promise of a brighter future. Her journey is a testament to the power of accessible healthcare, trained professionals, and the vital role of organisations like Trócaire in uplifting communities in need.
Taman's journey was not one walked alone. Her parents stood by her side and supported her not only with medical care but also with essential provisions to sustain their family's well-being. “Through the nutrition program, I received a voucher for a food basket, ensuring that nourishment was never out of reach, even in this challenging time,” says Idman.
Taman's story doesn't end here. Community health workers will continue to visit her bi-weekly to monitor her progress, advise her young mother on exclusive breastfeeding, and remind her of essential things like immunization dates.
