Joint Evaluation of Improving Access to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in Rural Fishing Communities
Assessing progress, results and lessons for sustainable WASH services in underserved communities
Highlights
The Government of Sierra Leone, UNICEF and implementing partners collaborated to improve access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene services in some of the country’s most underserved rural fishing communities. Funded by the Government of Iceland through UNICEF, the USD 5 million programme was implemented from 2019 to 2023 across 40 fishing communities in Bonthe, Pujehun, Port Loko and Western Rural.
The programme focused on constructing and rehabilitating water points and sanitation facilities, promoting hygiene behaviour change, and strengthening community-based WASH structures. This joint evaluation, conducted in 2024, assesses the programme’s achievements, effectiveness and sustainability, generating lessons to inform future WASH programming and support more inclusive and sustainable services for vulnerable rural communities.
