UNICEF statement on the death of a five-year-old boy in Datu Piang, Maguindanao del Sur
COTABATO CITY, 12 February 2026 — UNICEF is deeply concerned by reports that a five-year-old boy was killed after being hit by a stray bullet inside a learning centre in Datu Piang, Maguindanao del Sur. Schools are zones of peace. The death of a child in a place meant for learning and play is tragic and unacceptable. UNICEF expresses its deepest sympathies and condolences to the bereaved family.
We acknowledge the ongoing official investigation and appreciate efforts to clarify the circumstances while prioritizing children’s safety.
“This is a painful reminder that even classrooms are not shielded from the effects of armed violence. A five-year-old child lost his life in a place meant to nurture and protect him. Schools and learning centres must remain safe for children at all times, regardless of the situation beyond their walls,” said Kyungsun Kim, UNICEF Philippines Representative.
Despite improvements in protecting children in the Bangsamoro Region from grave violations, children continue to face risks from violence and insecurity. In the last two years, at least 14 children were killed or maimed in armed clashes in the region.
UNICEF calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to prioritize the protection of civilians, especially children. Under Republic Act No. 7610, children must be protected from all forms of violence and from circumstances that endanger their survival and development. Schools and learning spaces must be protected as safe zones where children can learn and play at all times.
