NIKSIC, 24 September 2022. Every young person must show, by virtue of personal example, the capacity to accept others. By doing so, we create a happier environment for every child and for all people. This is what UNICEF young reporters said at the panel discussion named “Let’s nurture a culture of diversity” held in Niksic as part of the 2nd Autumn Book Fair “Anderva Book”.
Milena Kekovic spoke about examples of (in)tolerance in school and outside it, in the family and society.
When studying biology, we learn about diversity. However, when we leave the classroom, we tend to reject those who are different. Tolerance is shown through personal example.
Mina Boskovic said that the topic of a culture of diversity stood out among the many issues that the young reporters had covered.
While we were shooting our short documentary feature titled ‘My Life’, we heard from many of our peers that they faced disrespect for being different. We heard from young people all over Montenegro about violence, poverty, rejection…
Elmedin Spatolaj spoke about a culture of dialogue from the point of view of a young Roma. His participation in the UNICEF initiative helped him better understand the cultural context of Montenegro.
I am delighted with diversity in our country. While travelling with young reporters, I met people who dress differently, have different customs, ways of speaking…
Emir Dresevic reflected on the challenges young people face on the internet. “The online world is a field in which the other and the different are often not respected,” he said.
There is both light and darkness around us, so there is tolerance and intolerance. Young people learn from the examples of adults. If adults set shining examples, there is a greater chance that future children will build a better society.
The panel discussion was attended by students from elementary schools in Niksic who expressed interest in UNICEF’s initiative and had a number of questions for the young reporters regarding appearing in public, their fieldwork experience and the challenges they faced when they were shooting their stories as reporters.
The 2nd Autumn Book Fair, “Anderva Book”, organized by the Njegos National Library, is taking place in the building of the Niksic Theatre and will run until 27 September.
UNICEF's Young Reporters gladly accepted the invitation to participate in order to repeat two messages of the media literacy campaign of which they are the main promoters: Let's choose what we read and Diversity is wealth.
