In the bustling streets of Bamako, the dunes of Timbuktu or the schools of Koulikoro, a new generation of children has risen. Not to play, but to speak, inform and defend. They are Mali’s child journalists, and their mission is clear: to carry the voice of those who have none.

An adventure that begins with a dream

It all began with an announcement on Facebook, a message on WhatsApp, or a word from a mentor. For Assetou, it was the desire to make children’s ideas heard by decision-makers. For Amadou, from Gao, it was the dream of defending the rights of young people. And for Maïmouna, it was a chance to try again after failing a public speaking competition.

Each child has a story, a motivation, a spark. Some were inspired by their parents, others by figures such as the presenter of ORTM’s television news, who herself was once a child journalist.

The competition: a moment of revelation

The online selection process went smoothly for most. The questions were considered accessible, well designed and, above all, meaningful. The most memorable moment? For many, it was explaining why they wanted to become child journalists. That was when words came to life and convictions were affirmed.

A ceremony, a commitment

The inauguration ceremony was a powerful moment. Fata, a student at the National Institute for the Blind, was inspired by Hadji Barry, president of the Malian Union of the Blind. Hamidou, from Timbuktu, praised the spirit of togetherness and commitment that prevailed.

Receiving the official badge from personalities such as the Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Communication, the Director General of the Malian Press and Advertising Agency, and UNICEF’s Deputy Representative was more than symbolic. It was a pact — a promise to speak truthfully, stand up for others, and never forget why they were chosen.

Voices for causes
These children do not just want to speak. They want to act. Assetou wants to fight against school dropout. Fata wants to raise awareness about early marriage. Maïmouna wants to address juvenile delinquency. Ousmane dreams of travelling across Mali to speak about education, health and protection.

They know that, thanks to the network supported by UNICEF and the Malian Press and Publicity Agency – AMAP, their voices can reach far. Very far.

A generation that inspires

This blog is a tribute to these young people who chose to turn their voices into tools for change. And if you listen closely, you will hear not only their words… but also the hopes of an entire country.

Note

The network of child journalists was established by AMAP with the support of UNICEF, through its own funds and thanks to the generous contributions of the Republic of Germany (BMZ) and Canada (Nafama).
