Mental health is something we all deal with, and for young people, especially those with disabilities, it can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. That’s why the ‘Love Yourself’ campaign is here—to remind you that your mental health matters. This youth-led initiative, supported by UNICEF Malaysia, is all about creating spaces where young people can feel safe, share their stories, and discover practical ways to care for their emotional well-being.

The ‘Love Yourself’ campaign is an ongoing journey to encourage and empower you and others like you to speak up, understand your mental health and learn how to manage it in ways that feel right for you. Whether it's through creative self-discovery or physical activities, this initiative lets you discover tools for you to be your best, authentic self.

So, What's the Goal?

The "Love Yourself" campaign’s mission is simple: to help youths take charge of their mental health journey. Giving youth like you and our participants a voice and the confidence to talk openly about mental health means everyone is a bit more prepared to face whatever challenges in life.

Through the campaign, our youth champions engaged in fun activities to equip them with essential skills to manage their mental health positively, like:

  • Self-discovery workshops to help them better understand their emotions
  • Drama therapy, where they can creatively express yourself
  • Games and sports to foster a sense of belonging.

The goal is simple: to create a supportive environment where youth can connect, grow, and thrive emotionally. Most importantly, it’s about making sure that everyone—including youth with disabilities—gets the support they need, free from judgment or stigma.

But why does mental health matter for youth?

As a human being, your mental health shapes how you think, feel, and act—it’s just as important as physical health! For many young people, especially those with disabilities, mental health can be extra tricky due to societal pressures and stigma, which can weigh on your emotional well-being.

That’s why staying in tune with your feelings is key. It helps you build resilience and create healthy ways to cope with challenges. The "Love Yourself" campaign is all about giving you the tools to take charge of your mental well-being, speak up, connect with others, and break down mental health stigma—leading the way for your peers!

The long-term vision? Youth-led mental health advocacy

UNICEF Malaysia’s vision goes beyond just raising awareness about mental health. When we support and uplift campaigns like the "Love Yourself" campaign, our long-term goal is to empower you and other young advocates to lead the charge for change.

This means that you won’t just be talking about mental health—you’ll be shaping the very conversation around it. This includes advocating for more inclusive mental health policies and participating in support systems that prioritize the well-being of all youth, especially those from marginalized groups.

Building a movement where mental health is a right, not a privilege, starts with us. It's about creating a future where youths (including youths with disabilities) are truly heard, celebrated, and supported. While the workshops and activities are great now, the vision is long-term: a world where youth drive mental health advocacy, with shame and stigma becoming a thing of the past!

3 Ways You Can Prioritize Your Mental Well-being Today

If you’re all pumped and excited, we want to encourage you to take ownership of your mental health by embracing three core values:

  1. Empathy: Everyone’s fighting their own battles, and empathy means you’re there to listen and support—even if their struggles aren’t like yours. For example, if a friend’s been quieter than usual, ask how they’re doing and just listen. A little kindness can go a long way in creating a caring community!
  2. Self-Advocacy: Speak up for yourself! It’s strong to know how you feel and what you need. Whether it’s texting a friend, talking to a teacher, or seeking help, standing up for your mental health means you get the care you deserve.
  3. Inclusivity: Make sure no one’s left out! Creating spaces where everyone feels welcome—no matter their abilities or background—helps build a world where we can all thrive together. Think of it like inviting everyone to sit at your table!

Let's Build a Future Where Mental Health Is a Priority

The "Love Yourself" campaign is a powerful reminder that your mental health is important—and so is the mental health of those around you. By coming together to support each other, we can create a future where everyone has access to the mental health resources they need—a future where young people, especially those with disabilities, are empowered to love themselves fully and confidently.

Remember, mental health is a journey, not a destination. The more we talk about it, share our experiences, and take action, the closer we get to a world where mental well-being is celebrated as a fundamental part of who we are.

So, let’s keep moving forward—together!
