UNICEF and Ministry of Education begin four-day workshop to strengthen inclusive education

18 November 2025

17 November, Maseru, Lesotho – UNICEF and the Ministry of Education and Training yesterday opened a four-day curriculum adaptation workshop aimed at improving inclusive and equitable education in Lesotho. The workshop is part of the Knowledge and Innovation Exchange Africa 19 initiative, supported by GPE and IDRC.

UNICEF ESARO has been a member of the Africa 19 consortium since 2020. The consortium, which includes the African Union and UNESCO IICBA, supports nineteen Anglophone African countries to share knowledge, scale proven solutions, and strengthen national education systems. UNICEF leads work on early childhood education, gender equality, and inclusive education.

The UNICEF Representative a.i.  Bob Muchabaiwa highlighted the importance of this work and said, “Inclusive education is not only a policy. It is a commitment to every child. Through the KIX Africa 19 Hub we are building evidence-based and scalable solutions so that children with disabilities learn and thrive.”

The workshop is equipping curriculum specialists, lecturers, and teachers with the skills to adapt the national curriculum for learners with disabilities. Experts from the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) and the Kenyan Ministry of Education are sharing practical classroom-tested approaches, including differentiated instruction, accessible assessments, and learner-responsive pedagogy.

Key benefits expected from the workshop include:

  • Strengthened national capacity for curriculum and assessment reforms
  • Improved teacher preparation supported by practical experience from Kenya
  • A clear roadmap from curriculum review to school-level implementation
  • Learning resources that are more accessible for children with disabilities
  • Enhanced south-to-south technical learning and collaboration

The UNICEF Representative a.i. added, “Partnerships such as this one show what is possible when countries share knowledge and experience. UNICEF is committed to supporting the Ministry of Education and Training in building an education system where no child is left behind.”

UNICEF will continue to support the Ministry and partners in strengthening inclusive education in Lesotho.
