EU supports UNICEF Lesotho to strengthen national risk preparedness and response efforts
How social protection is saving lives in Lesotho
To achieve the overall objective of the grant, UNICEF Lesotho will work jointly with WFP and FAO to support GoL to build an integrated and functional Early Warning (EW) and Early Action (EA) Systems. It is also vital for Lesotho to strengthen its disaster risk preparedness and shock responsive social protection systems owing to the fact that vulnerable groups are often hardest hit and at risk of food when emergency situations occur. In 2016 the El Nino induced drought affected over 600, 000 people of which 477, 000 required immediate humanitarian assistance.
UNICEF, FAO and WFP, contributed significantly to Lesotho's response to the El Nino-induced drought through their different programme components. Besides saving lives through provision of food, water as well as medium to long term benefits of improved agricultural techniques, use of high quality seeds and Gender Based Violence (GBV) programming, they also contributed to resilience strengthening at individual, household, community and national levels.
