Dahiro's Determination: From Malnutrition to Recovery
Supporting Ibrahim on his path to recovery
Dahiro Aden cradles her one-and-a-half-year-old son, Mohamed Ibrahim, as they sit together in a health center within the IFO section of Dadaab Refugee Camp, Garissa County. With tender care, she feeds him Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), a vital lifeline for children battling severe malnutrition.
Once severely malnourished due to the relentless drought that ravaged northern Kenya, Ibrahim is now on the path to recovery. The nutrient-rich RUTF, provided by UNICEF with EU humanitarian aid, is steadily restoring his health. Each paste sachet brings Dahiro hope as she witnesses the gradual improvement in her son’s condition. She yearns for the day when Ibrahim can play and explore freely, like any other child his age
Beyond direct aid, UNICEF, in partnership with the EU, is collaborating with the county governments of the drought-affected counties to enhance the capacity of healthcare workers and systems in drought-affected counties. This comprehensive approach aims to equip communities with the tools to withstand future crises.
The recent droughts, intensified by climate change, have had a devastating impact on children's nutrition, not only in Dadaab but across northern Kenya. Families like Dahiro's face immense challenges as they struggle to survive and protect their children's health.
