Highlights

Violence against children is a major issue in Kenya. The different forms of violence children experience include sexual violence, physical violence and emotional violence. The 2010 Violence Against Children Study revealed that 66.0 per cent of girls and 73.1 per cent of boys experienced physical violence prior to age 18.

All children are vulnerable to violence, but violence disproportionately affects more girls than boys. Gender discrimination towards girls contributes to the neglect and acceptance of violence against girls. This has been adopted as a social norm at the family level and community level.

This children’s booklet is designed to provide important information that will help to guide children with necessary information, knowledge and skills to better understand and deal with issues surrounding violence against children.
