What is the portfolio approach?
The Sustainable WASH Innovation Hub portfolio contains a range of solutions that use new approaches, tools and technologies to address key problems UNICEF is seeking to solve for and with children and young people. Solutions within our portfolio are selected based on their potential to accelerate results for children across multiple countries and regions. Our strategic and programme-driven approach emphasizes evidence-building and scaling up impactful solutions across diverse geographies.
To guide the selection of key solutions, the Sustainable WASH Innovation Hub uses problem statements capturing significant challenges to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6. They help highlight areas UNICEF can add value to the existing landscape, provide support or management for existing solutions and offer opportunities for brokering, enabling and developing an impactful, scalable and sustainable business model.
We regularly review possible solutions to critical WASH challenges for inclusion in our current portfolio. These address inadequate groundwater mapping and development, insufficient climate-sensitive data in WASH programming, the need for supportive environments for WASH small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and complexities in innovative finance options.

Previous call for applications
In March 2025, our call for applications focused on strengthening supportive environments for WASH SMEs and enhancing climate-sensitive data and integration into WASH programming. This window is now closed. Applicants will be contacted in Summer 2025.
