Suriname Launches National Early Childhood Development Policy
Paramaribo, March 17, 2025 – In a landmark moment for early childhood development in Suriname, the Government of Suriname, in partnership with UNICEF, officially launched the National Early Childhood Development (ECD) Policy. The policy sets a strategic framework to enhance early learning, childcare, adequate nutrition, health, and parental support, ensuring that every child receives the best possible start in life.
The official signing of the policy document was conducted by Minister of Education, Science and Culture, Henry Ori; Minister of Social Affairs and Housing, Ines Pane; Minister of Justice and Police, Kenneth Amoksi; and Minister of Health, Amar Ramadhin, with UNICEF Representative Nicolas Pron serving as a witness. This milestone reflects a strong governmental commitment to investing in the early years, recognizing the crucial role of early childhood development in shaping a nation’s future.
President Chandrikapersad Santokhi emphasized the national importance of this policy, stating: “Investing in early childhood development is investing in the future of Suriname. This policy ensures that no child is left behind and that every child has the opportunity to thrive.”
UNICEF Representative Nicolas Pron commended Suriname’s dedication to early childhood development, noting: “This policy reflects a shared vision: to provide every child with the right environment to learn, grow, and thrive. UNICEF is proud to support Suriname in strengthening early childhood systems that will benefit generations to come.”
The National ECD Policy was developed through extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including government ministries UNICEF, educators, healthcare professionals, and civil society organizations. It provides a comprehensive roadmap for delivering high-quality early childhood services and ensuring equitable access to early education for all children, particularly the most vulnerable.
This launch marks the beginning of a new era for early childhood development in Suriname, paving the way for stronger policies, enhanced service delivery, and a more holistic approach to nurturing the potential of every child.
