Riyadh, 7 November 2024 The Arab Gulf Programme for Development-AGFUND, announced a funding contribution to UNICEF’s mental health and psychosocial support programmes for children affected by the recent escalation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

Before this latest escalation, more than 500,000 children in Gaza were identified as needing mental health and psychosocial support. Today, every child has been exposed to deeply distressing events and trauma, marked by widespread destruction and displacement. This grant will allow UNICEF to provide mental health and psychological support services.

“UNICEF welcomes this timely contribution helping children overcome distress and trauma given the ongoing conflict,” said Eltayeb Adam, UNICEF Gulf Area Office Representative. “The funding will allow us to reach 3,600 children and 3,300 caregivers with a much-needed support to recover through UNICEF’s ongoing Mental Health and Psychosocial Support activities in the Gaza Strip.”

“We believe that investing in the mental health and wellbeing of children is crucial, especially in times of conflict. Our partnership with UNICEF aims to provide essential support to the children of Gaza, helping them to heal and rebuild their lives amidst the ongoing challenges they face.” Said Dr. Nasser Alkahtani, Executive Director of AGFUND.

The programme activities will include family strengthening programs, violence prevention interventions, and case management services for children who are victims of various forms of violence, including conflict-related violence and abuse.

Phase one of UNICEF’s Phycological Therapy to Children Programme in Gaza which was concluded in August 2022 and supported by AGFUND, reached 2,368 children with psychosocial support services, case management, access to various activities including expressive arts, life skills education, group counselling, as well as awareness raising for caregivers.
