Tbilisi, Georgia. 1 June 2026 - On Child Protection Day in Georgia, UNICEF calls on the government, communities, families, and young people themselves to come together to protect the rights of every child. Today is not only a moment to celebrate, but an opportunity to reaffirm a shared commitment to ensuring that all children grow up safe, protected, and empowered to reach their full potential.

In Ambrolauri, western Georgia, UNICEF - together with the Public Defender’s Office (PDO) and with support from the European Union - brought children, parents, and communities together for an interactive Children’s Day programme that turns rights into lived realities. Children engaged in creative and playful activities, including games and storytelling in partnership with Litkid, while also participated in a PDO-led workshop where they explored how institutions protect their rights and where to seek help. Through role plays, discussions, and interactive quizzes, children built practical knowledge of protection mechanisms and confidently expressed their views. The activities were implemented in collaboration with Ambrolauri Municipality.

Georgia has made important progress in strengthening systems to protect children. More children today are growing up in family-based care, and awareness of child rights continues to grow.

Yet, challenges remain. Some children still face violence, neglect, and exclusion. Others struggle to cope with poverty, to access quality services or the support they need to develop.

“Every child in Georgia carries immense potential. When we protect children’s rights and invest in their well-being, we are not only supporting individual children - we are building a stronger, more inclusive and resilient society for everyone." -  Isabella Castrogiovanni, UNICEF Representative in Georgia.

"It is inspiring to see children today learning about their rights, raising their voices, and engaging with the systems designed to protect them. UNICEF is grateful to the European Union and the Public Defender’s Office for their strong partnership in making this possible. Together we can ensure every child grows up safe, supported, and empowered." - added Isabella Castrogiovanni.

On this day, UNICEF calls for renewed action to:

  • Prevent violence against children by investing in early support for families and strengthening community-based services.
  • Ensure inclusive and accessible services for all children, especially those most vulnerable.
  • Amplify children’s voices, allowing them to participate meaningfully in decisions that affect their lives.

On Child Protection Day, we reaffirm that prioritizing children in policies and budgets is not optional, it is essential to secure their rights, well-being, and future.
