See Every Colour campaign addressing stigma around children with special education needs summarizes results

The communication for behaviour change campaign was focused on increasing access to quality education for children with special educational needs

Tbilisi, Georgia, 14 June 2022 – Up to 600 schoolchildren, parents, and teachers participated in informational meetings and more than 280,000 social network users were reached as part of the campaign initiated by UNICEF. The campaign aimed at making formal and informal education continuously and equally accessible to all children despite their needs by reducing the stigma related to children with special educational needs. The project is supported by the Government of Norway.

The concluding event of the campaign was organized on 14 June – the Day of People with Disabilities in Georgia. The children, their parents and teachers who participated in the campaign were greeted at the event by Marko Soldic, Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Norway in Georgia, and Ghassan Khalil, UNICEF Representative in Georgia.

The campaign was launched in November 2021, aiming at raising awareness of the importance of inclusive education and increasing the involvement of children with special needs in the classroom processes. The meetings were conducted in schools in six regions of Georgia. The schoolchildren, parents and teachers at the schools in the six regions received a detailed overview of differentiated teaching approaches, enabling students with different learning abilities to be equally involved in the educational process and manifest their skills. In parallel with the training, there was active discussion and idea-generating sessions to create a better inclusive environment. As a result of the meetings, the students acknowledged the principles of inclusive education, which implies not only physical attendance of children but also their active and full involvement. Each social group of the participants saw its role in establishing an inclusive environment and developed a specific vision.

In addition to face-to-face meetings, an information campaign was actively underway on social networks. More than 50 information materials were placed on social networks, including educational and entertainment resources related to inclusive education. These materials were designed to show parents and teachers examples of positive behaviour to help them develop proper language and etiquette towards people with special educational needs.

Private sector actors with high social responsibility also joined the campaign and integrated inclusive education into their communication strategies. Various awareness-raising activities about the importance of inclusion were carried out by a number of private companies. They re-emphasized the critical role of business involvement in education and development.

A quantitative survey was conducted within the campaign to study the level of public awareness on inclusion. One of the key findings the survey has revealed was that 90 per cent of the surveyed believed that teacher qualification level was the biggest challenge to inclusive education. The survey results will be published in June 2022.

The campaign was implemented by UNICEF, with the support of the Government of Norway and in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science within the three-year project “Leave No Child Out”, aiming at strengthening inclusive education in Georgia.
