Multidimensional Child Poverty Analysis in Eswatini

This report presents the latest multidimensional child poverty analysis in the Kingdom of Eswatini, led by the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development with support from UNICEF. The analysis was undertaken through a government-led, multi-sectoral technical working group, bringing together key line ministries and national institutions to ensure strong ownership, relevance, and policy alignment.

The report applies the Multiple Overlapping Deprivation Analysis methodology to examine child poverty beyond income, focusing on children’s deprivations across nutrition, health, education, child protection, water and sanitation, housing, and access to information. The analysis is based on nationally representative data from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS6, 2021–2022). By grounding the analysis in an independently conducted, government-led, and evidence-based process, the report provides a strong foundation for policy dialogue, planning, and monitoring progress towards national development priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals.
