Highlights

UNICEF is sounding the alarm on the dire situation faced by children and vulnerable communities who are bearing the brunt of the climate crisis, intensified by El Niño, in Eastern and Southern Africa. In the region, over 49 million people including 27 million children are in need across 18 countries.

Together with donors and partners, UNICEF is supporting governments and local organizations to provide life-saving interventions and prepare for potential increases in need. As the longer-term effects of El Niño emerge in the months to come, with crop failures and increased admissions for severe acute malnutrition exacerbating pre-existing humanitarian needs, UNICEF calls on all partners to help scale up the region’s response to this quickly evolving emergency.

To scale-up efforts across the region, UNICEF is appealing for US$ 200 million to reach 49 million people including 27 million children.
