SARAJEVO, 22 August 2024 - Our deepest thoughts and sympathies go out to the families of those who lost their lives in a shooting at the Sanski Most High School in Una-Sana Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina and all of those affected by this heinous act.
While no children were injured, the shooting will no doubt spark a sense of fear and distress among students, school staff and families, marring the beginning of a new school year.
There is no place for violence in schools. Schools must be protected to ensure they are places of learning, hope and preparation. And yet, the incident marks the second school shooting in Bosnia and Herzegovina to take place over the past 18 months.
UNICEF and UNESCO in Bosnia and Herzegovina remain committed to working with institutions across the country to ensure safety in schools. We stand in solidarity with the local community and are ready to work with the authorities to ensure that schools are places where the whole community, including teachers and children, feel safe and supported.
We urge members of the public and the media to refrain from speculating about motives, sharing images and videos related to this violent incident, as this may deepen the distress among children and their families.
