Belize Celebrates First Cohort of Certified Lactation Counselors

Belize has reached an important milestone in strengthening support for mothers and infants with the certification of its first cohort of Lactation Counselors.

UNICEF Belize joined the Ministry of Health & Wellness, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP), and other partners in celebrating six health professionals who successfully completed specialized training to become certified Lactation Counselors. UNICEF proudly supported the training of four of the newly certified professionals.

The newly certified counselors are now equipped with the knowledge and skills to provide essential guidance and support to mothers as they navigate breastfeeding, particularly during the critical early stages of parenthood. Their expertise will help address common challenges, promote breastfeeding best practices, and ensure that families receive the support they need to give children the healthiest possible start in life.

The certification ceremony was held under the theme, "Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works," highlighting the vital role breastfeeding plays in improving child health and nutrition, strengthening family well-being, and contributing to healthier and more resilient communities.

Breastfeeding is one of the most effective interventions for ensuring optimal child growth, development, and survival. Expanding access to skilled breastfeeding support is a critical step toward improving maternal and child health outcomes across Belize.

UNICEF remains committed to working alongside the Government of Belize and key partners to strengthen maternal and child health services and ensure that every mother has access to the information, care, and support needed to successfully breastfeed and nurture her child.

As Belize celebrates this achievement, the country's first certified Lactation Counselors stand ready to serve as champions for breastfeeding support, helping more mothers and children thrive.
