The Sahel region is prone to recurrent crises, which puts at risk decades of development gains. The communities there have shown extraordinary resilience to the shocks they face. Risk-informed programming enables regular monitoring of risk levels and timely adaptation of programme strategies.
Building Resilience in the Sahel Programme
With the support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), UNICEF has launched an innovative programme aiming to strengthen the capacity of systems, communities and individuals to cope on their own with the shocks that are bound to come. Under this programme, UNICEF interventions converge with those of the World Food Programme (WFP) and German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) in the same geographic locations, targeting the same communities, in order to provide a critical mass of resilience interventions that will achieve a sustainable impact.

Evidence-based learning with stakeholders is a crucial part of the Building Resilience in the Sahel Programme. Continuous learning is required to adapt and improve resilience programming and ensure that models developed are efficient, flexible and scalable.
