Mobile safety classes help to protect Ukraine’s children from mines and explosive remnants of war
UNICEF, together with the State Emergency Service and the National Police, is conducting safety lessons for children living in Ukraine’s frontline regions

“I liked the cartoon about mines the most,” exclaims Anya, a first-grader at one of the schools in Zaporizhzhia. “You shouldn’t touch them.”
Since 2023, mobile safety classes have been providing thousands of children across Ukraine with vital lifesaving knowledge. The lessons take place in specially-equipped vehicles provided by UNICEF to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and the National Police. This enables rescuers and police officers to conduct interactive safety lessons even in remote communities.
“We want children to know how to act correctly in any situation. Therefore, we explain to them the algorithm of actions when detecting mines and other explosive devices, traffic rules, safe behaviour during a fire, on water, and even the basics of cybersecurity. We employ engaging child-friendly methods, such as videos, posters and warm-up exercises.”
The mobile classroom is equipped with a screen for presentations, mock-ups with useful instructions and handouts. Children watch cartoons, play educational games and apply their knowledge in practical situations.
“What should you do if you see a mine?” a teacher asks six-year-old Maksym.
“Step back the same way and tell an adult,” he replies. “Call 101.”
According to rescuers, children now remember safety rules better thanks to interactive methods and edutainment approaches. Thematic comics, colouring books and stickers from UNICEF help them to revise the rules at home with parents.
“I believe it is absolutely essential to conduct such learning activities these days,” adds Anna Popsuy. “Nowadays, we pay more attention to the rules for handling explosive objects. We also tell older children what to do if they find themselves under rubble. In general, we explain what dangers they may face and what they can do to avoid them.”
Mobile safety classes continue to operate in the most remote settlements of Ukraine, close to the frontline, and help children feel more protected. Since the launch of these classes, more than 185,000 children have learned safety rules, thanks to UNICEF and partners.
In total, over 1,080,000 children in 2024 have learned about safety rules through various educational activities in their communities.
